Sustainability We care

Here at Insomnia, we care about sustainability. The social and ecological impacts of our daily business can be extensive. We are aware of this and put every effort towards acting responsible when it comes to sustainability.

Our coffee tastes great (even if we say so ourselves). And isn’t it satisfying to know that it also helps sustain communities around the globe? Having launched our 100% Fairtrade certified coffee and tea in 2006, the Insomnia coffee blend comes from four communities in Colombia, Sumatra, Peru and Tanzania and over the course of a year we sell over 22 million Fairtrade cups of coffee, all of which contributes to the sustainability of these communities. With the steady and fair business generated by Insomnia Coffee Company, the communities can build educational and medical facilities, improve water and electrical supply and facilitate living conditions.

Social Sustainability

Strengthening Coffee Communities

The security of the coffee supply chain depends on strong farming communities. Fairtrade helps build rural infrastructure, which becomes the backbone of coffee-farming communities. Access to Fairtrade capital and technical assistance encourages entrepreneurship at farm level leading to better yields and diversification – all of which means more income and stability for coffee farmers.

Insomnia plays a key role in connecting the two ends of the value chain; farmers and consumers. A growing number of conscientious consumers want to be sure their shopping has a positive impact on small farmers and Fairtrade is an effective way of providing that assurance.

Environmental Sustainability

The Future of Coffee

Fairtrade Standards help small farmers make environmental protection an integral part of their farm management, including reducing pollution, limiting the use of harmful chemicals and finding organic alternatives.

Fairtrade enables cooperatives to invest in field-level technical assistance which, along with market knowledge gained from close links with buyers, means farmers learn how to improve quality at source.

Moreover, every year during the 2 weeks of Fairtrade Fortnight, we raise funds for our nominated Insomnia Projects of the Oromia Coffee Farmers’ Co-operative Union you can read more about these projects here

In our daily business we handle vast amounts of coffee. After our delicious coffees have been brewed, the advantages the used grounds hold for the environment are countless. Using coffee grounds on plants and gardens is sustainable and beneficial. We are happy to supply them to our customers for free for their gardening.

The benefits to your soil are great. There are three ways to use coffee grounds on your plants: for composting, as fertilizer and to control pests. You can use the grounds to take care of your plants all year round.

It’s great to know that our grounds can be put to such good use after you enjoyed your favourite coffee and we are happy to supply them to our customers for their gardening. Pick up a free coffee ground bag in any of our stores. Another great benefit is that the grounds are not added into landfill. So we achieve two benefits with one single action: helping you nurture your soil and protecting our environment.
